The advent of computerized metal detectors has opened a whole
new world to metal detectorists. Charles Garrett was awarded
a patent for a computerized metal detector as long ago as
1982, but it is only in the last few years that they have
really come into their own.
Garrett continues to produce computerized metal detectors and
several other manufacturers have entered the fray, most
notably Whites and Minelab. Many detectorists would say that
although Garrett originated the computerized metal detector,
his machines have been left in the shadows by the latest
offerings from other manufacturers.
