Title: Mystery Australian Spitfires Hidden In a Mine?
Post by: Phantom_Major on July 27, 2008, 19:09:40 PM
A while back I mentioned on the Aviation Archaeology Folklore and Urban Legends (https://detecting.org.uk/aviation_archaeology/Aviation_Archaeology_Folklore_Urban_Legends.html) page a story about a number of Spitfire fighter aircraft that were supposedly hidden in a mine somewhere in Australia. A guy who had worked in the mining industry in Australia heard the story too and contacted me about their possible location, read about it here: Mystery Australian Spitfires Hidden In a Mine In Chillagoe? (https://detecting.org.uk/aviation_archaeology/Chillagoe_Spitfires_Australia.html)

Just had an interesting email from a guy in Australia who worked at Chillagoe in the 1970's and he has an interesting story to tell, although not about the Spitfires. Will post some details if he gives permission.
