Having spent a long time in HM Coastguard, I am used to doing lenghty Search Exercises along my local Beaches.
One morning after a very high tide and heavy swell I noticed some rusty encrusted metallic objects among some rocks. This sort of thing is not uncommon, as the shifting of the sands and tides can cause whole new rocky areas to be exposed quite frequently.
On closer inspection I noticed that they looked very much like Mortars, probably from WWI or II.
As a precaution my Coastguard team sealed off the area and called the EOD team.
Sure enough they turned out to be Spigot Mortars, and were removed by the disposal team.
I have now discovered 5 in total over the last 2 years.
You never know what the big storms or tides may reveal!
I'm scared to use my detector there now!!!
