Title: Identification of find. Halberd or poleaxe??
Post by: Tizzy77 on July 27, 2016, 17:35:16 PM
Hi can anybody help me to identify or date this item.   Found in wet bogland.  I think it is a poleaxe head or halberd but unsure.   It is still attached to a snapped end of a wooden shaft approx 2"  in diameter and is riveted through.  Condition isnt too good...laminated layers of rusting and the points are a bit bent.  Is this some kind of poleaxe or halberd?  It seems quite crude...and made from plate metal.  I will add some better photos.

This really does look like an incredible find!!! My immediate concern is conservation, is the wood or metal actively deteriorating or does it seem stable?

I have posted links to this thread on our twitter and Facebook, hopefully someone will be able to date it!!!!

Hi, thanks for the reply, it is in stable condition beneath the rust and lamination.  It measures almost 2 foot in length and 10" across.  We haven't tried to clean it up.

The wood is  also firm and stable, just snapped shank. Rivets are still tight and firmly in place.
